Consumer Protection in New Brunswick

The Commission is New Brunswick's financial market authority. Our mandate is to provide regulatory services that protect the public interest, enhance confidence in the financial and consumer marketplace and promote understanding of the sectors we regulate through education. We aim to create a strong and fair financial marketplace for all New Brunswickers. We do this by regulating industries, licensing and registering professionals and enforcing laws that set standards for fair business practices.

Our Role

  • Regulation and Oversight: We make rules in many of the financial and consumer services industries that we oversee. These legally-binding rules aim to prevent misconduct with New Brunswick’s financial and consumer services laws. We monitor companies and individuals to ensure they comply with their legal requirements and act honestly and fairly.
  • Licensing and Registration: We license and register firms and individuals in industries such as insurance, securities, mortgages, payday loans, real estate, and more.
  • Education: We provide unbiased financial information to help New Brunswickers understand our regulated sectors, and make informed decisions when interacting with professionals, products, and services in these sectors.
  • Enforcement: We investigate alleged breaches of financial and consumer services laws. We can take action when businesses or professionals break these laws. For example, we may revoke or refuse to issue a license or registration, impose conditions on a licence or registration, or issue sanctions or financial penalties.
