Cooperatives

Overview

The Commission administers the Cooperatives Act through regulation and incorporation of cooperatives in the province, ensuring cooperatives operate fairly and transparently for all members and consumers.

Cooperatives are member-owned organisations that share benefits among members. Examples include housing co-ops, daycares and funeral homes. As a member of a cooperative, you have the right to participate in decision-making, access information about the cooperative’s operations and share in its benefits. Before becoming a member, New Brunswickers should ensure the cooperative is incorporated in New Brunswick, review the bylaws and membership requirements, and have a clear understand how decisions are made and how profits are shared.

Consumer Protection

We incorporate cooperatives and ensure they comply with the Cooperatives Act.

What we can do:

• incorporate cooperatives in the province
• monitor compliance with the Cooperatives Act

What we cannot do:

• manage or control day-to-day operations and decisions of a cooperative
• resolve disputes among members
