Commissioner of Oaths
Overview
The Commission administers the Commissioners for Taking Affidavits Act on behalf of the Minister of Finance and Treasury Board, who is responsible for appointing individuals to act as commissioners of oaths.
A commissioner is a person authorized by law to administer oaths, and to take and receive affidavits and other sworn statements within New Brunswick. Lawyers, judges, justices of the peace, and certain other officials can act as Commissioners for Taking Affidavits by law and do not have to apply through the Commission.
Consumer Protection
We review and process applications and ensure commissioners are qualified and comply with the law.
What we can do:
- appoint and regulate commissioners
- address complaints and investigate misconduct
What we cannot do:
- provide commissioner services to the public
- appoint individuals under age 19 or with criminal convictions
