Seniors Initiative Committee

The Commission established the Seniors’ Initiative Committee to enhance regulatory safeguards for older and vulnerable adults and help protect them from financial exploitation.

Since its inception, the Committee has focused on developing practical tools and resources, strengthening stakeholder outreach, conducting research, and shaping strategy. Our vision is to help financial professionals, those working and caring for older adults, and older adults themselves prevent, recognize, and respond to financial abuse of older and vulnerable adults.

To achieve this, our work centers on four key areas:

  • Awareness and Knowledge: Enhancing understanding of financial abuse risks among industry professionals and the public.
  • Education: Providing training and resources to help professionals and caregivers identify and address exploitation.
  • Policy and Legislation: Advancing regulatory measures and industry best-practices.
  • Collaborative Initiatives: Partnering with local, national, and international organizations to maximize impact.

Notable Committee achievements include working with the Canadian Securities Administrators on amendments that introduced tools such as the trusted contact person and temporary holds, launching the Finances 50+ microsite for older adults and caregivers, and developing our Financial Exploitation of Older Adults eLearning module to help industry professionals and caregivers recognize and respond to financial exploitation. We also host an annual Walk for WEAAD to mark World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) in the month of June.

We actively participate in national and international efforts to advance senior financial protection, including working with the North American Securities Administrators Association and the Canadian Securities Administrators on issues impacting older and vulnerable investors.

Financial professionals are encouraged to explore our resources, participate in training, and join us in strengthening financial safety for seniors and vulnerable adults.
