Consumer Alert: Check licensing before dealing with a door-to-door seller

Door-to-door sales activity seems to be a constant in New Brunswick, no matter the weather. Driveway paving and sealing, eaves troughing or gutters, internet and mobile packages and snowplow services are among the products or services you might be offered.

The Commission has received reports recently of door-to-door (direct) sellers operating in the province without a licence. Direct sellers must be licensed by the Commission and carry their licence with them while conducting business.

You can make sure a direct seller is licensed in New Brunswick by checking www.fcnb.ca/check-now.

It is important when dealing with direct sellers to watch out for ones that:

  • Ask for cash only payments
  • Require most, or all, of the fee up front
  • Use removable car magnets or decals advertising the company name
  • Are evasive about the total price, the exact work to be done, or details about their business and its location
  • Use high pressure sales tactics to push you to make a quick decision.  For example, if you act immediately, they can give you a discount because they are in your neighbourhood or have leftover materials.

If you experience high-pressure sales tactics from a salesperson or company engaged in direct selling, report it to the Commission. If you observe suspicious or unusual behaviour, call the police.

The Commission offers tips on its website on how to be a safe and informed consumer when dealing with direct sellers.
