Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) Phone Scams
Someone claiming to be from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) targets newcomers.
How it works
The scammer (posing as an official from IRCC) contacts a newcomer to New Brunswick saying there is a problem with paperwork and a fee needs to be paid. They threaten legal action or even kidnapping if money isn’t sent.
How to protect yourself
Staff at IRCC never accept payments over the phone, by prepaid credit cards, gift cards, cryptocurrency, or private money transfers. If you get such a request, it’s a scam.
How to report it
If you suspect you’re a victim of this scam, or attempted scam contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre, and your local police or RCMP.
