Consumer Alert: Door-to-door sales on the rise in summer

Alert.

Summer is here and that often means an increase in door-to-door sales activity.  Driveway paving and sealing, roofing, and lawn care services are among the products and/or services you might be offered this season. First and foremost, always ensure the salesperson is licensed and be aware of potential red flags, such as:

  • Cash only payment
  • Requiring most, or all, of the fee up front
  • Using removable car magnets or decals advertising the company name
  • Being evasive about the total price, the exact work to be done, or details about their business and its location
  • Using high pressure sales tactics to push you to make a quick decision.  For example, if you act immediately, they are able to give you a discount because they are in your neighbourhood or have leftover materials.

If you experience high-pressure sales tactics from a salesperson or company direct selling, report it to the Commission. If you observe suspicious or unusual behaviour, call the police.

The Commission offers tips on its website on how to be a safe and informed consumer when dealing with direct sellers.
